In brief

The Bavaria 38 SPORT HT is a hard-top cruiser for couples or families wanting a sheltered cockpit and two cabins, suitable for capable day trips and short coastal cruising. Its main caveat is version identity: the observed 2006 and 2011 boats have different dimensions and drives, so documents and machinery must be established before comparing value.

The Bavaria 38 SPORT HT is best approached as a name spanning materially different boats, not as one immutable specification. Batoo’s 8 October 2026 dataset contains a 2006 boat and a 2011 boat with different dimensions and drive systems. A buyer should therefore establish the exact build identity first, and only then judge machinery, condition and asking price.

Design, specifications and chronology

Bavaria’s primary release of 31 August 2010 introduced the SPORT HT 38 as a new hard-top member of the SPORT line. It also states that the open SPORT 38 had appeared at boot Düsseldorf in January 2010. That chronology creates a real naming issue for a 2006 listing carrying the 38 Sport HT label; it does not justify silently applying the later factory data to the earlier boat.

A contemporary 2010 technical account gives the newer model an overall length of about 11.80 m, a 3.99 m beam, 0.70 m draft and 8,900 kg unloaded weight. It records approximately 720 l of fuel, 250 l of water, two cabins, four berths, a twelve-person maximum and CE category B. These figures describe that documented version rather than certifying either individual listing.

Batoo boat B200611.35 × 3.84 m0.70 mtwin Volvo Penta D6-310 IPS, 620 hp total2 cabins, 1 head

Conflicting numbers must remain separate. The 2011 listing agrees with the 2010 documentation on length and beam but not draft; the 2006 listing differs in principal dimensions and specifies IPS. Measurement conventions, appendages, driveline or model generation may explain the gaps, but only the builder’s plate, HIN/CIN, CE paperwork and original manual can settle a particular hull.

Versions and machinery require positive identification

The shared idea is an opening hard-top over a social cockpit with cruising accommodation below. Both Batoo records state two cabins and one head, while the period documentation describes two cabins and four berths. That supports a compact cruising brief, although it says nothing conclusive about optional joinery, tankage or equipment on an individual boat.

The machinery divide matters more than cosmetic equipment. The 2011 record lists two D4 300 engines, 600 total horsepower and 600 hours. The 2006 record lists two D6-310 IPS units, 620 total horsepower and 1,180 hours. Those are seller-side catalogue fields observed by Batoo, not an engine survey or a diagnostic download.

Volvo Penta says its Connect service can provide registered owners with manuals, handbooks, parts information, recalls, campaigns, warranty information and service history. That makes serial-number identification valuable during due diligence: “D4,” “D6” and “IPS” are families, while the applicable maintenance parts and instructions belong to the exact engine and drive.

Reasoned pros and cons

The strongest design argument is the balance between shelter and open-air use. In Batoo’s analysis, a large opening roof can make a sports cruiser useful in changeable weather without fully enclosing the helm and cockpit. Two separate cabins also give a couple, family or two couples more privacy than a single-volume weekender.

The near-four-metre beam of the documented 2010 version benefits usable volume, but it can affect berth choice, lifting and storage costs. Twin engines provide useful control and redundancy, yet they also duplicate service items. An IPS installation introduces pods, seals, propellers, electronic steering and corrosion protection that demand the right inspection expertise.

Complexity is the principal drawback. A moving roof, twin diesel installation and aging hotel systems can each generate disproportionate bills if records are incomplete. Attractive upholstery or a long options list should not outweigh evidence about the hull, deck, cooling circuits, exhaust, drives and electrical installation.

Ideal use and the right owner

The Bavaria 38 SPORT HT suits an owner seeking an advanced day boat that can also undertake coastal weekends. The protected cockpit is particularly relevant where intense sun, wind or rain makes a completely open layout less practical. Two cabins and one head form a workable plan for a couple with children or occasional guests.

It is less persuasive for someone whose priority is the simplest possible ownership. Twin propulsion and a powered roof create recurring inspection points; an IPS-equipped example adds a specialist driveline. CE category B in the period specification is a design classification, not permission to disregard weather, loading, crew ability or the certificate attached to the actual hull.

The right buyer will choose the documented condition rather than the badge. Batoo does not rank the two dossier boats because there has been no independent survey, sea trial or review of full maintenance files. The later date or lower displayed hours cannot, by itself, prove the better purchase.

Used-boat checks that change the decision

Start by reconciling identity. Match HIN/CIN, builder’s plate, build date and first registration, then tie engine and transmission serials to invoices and manuals. Establish whether published length is hull length or overall length, and confirm the declared draft and weight in the boat’s own papers rather than borrowing another version’s figures.

Commission an independent propulsion inspection. It should include a genuinely cold start, electronic diagnostics, fluid condition, cooling and exhaust checks, leak inspection and operation under load. On IPS, inspect pods, steering, seals, propellers, anodes, corrosion and impact evidence; on the D4 installation, identify the exact stern drives and use their serial-specific service schedule.

Survey the hull and deck for moisture patterns, previous repairs and movement around structural supports. Examine bilges, bulkheads, engine beds, seacocks, hoses, exhaust runs and bathing-platform attachments. Operate the hard-top through its full travel and test drains, seals, guides and emergency closure rather than accepting a short demonstration at the berth.

Domestic systems deserve a loaded test. Shore power, chargers, batteries, freshwater, waste system, pumps and installed appliances should work together without overheating or unexplained voltage drop. A sea trial should log rpm, speed, trim, vibration, temperatures and control response under stated load; this dossier reports no Batoo test or first-hand performance.

Finally, convert defects into written estimates. The meaningful comparison is purchase price plus immediate rectification and near-term scheduled work. A cheaper boat with deferred drive or roof maintenance can exceed the cost of a better documented example very quickly.

Alternatives and a useful comparison frame

AlternativeWhy shortlist itQuestion to resolve

Sealine SC35strong focus on a sheltered social cockpitis its different space distribution preferable?

These are analytical alternatives, not price equivalents or endorsements. Engine access, roof arrangement, interior light, berth requirements and parts support vary by year and specification. Comparisons should use like-for-like configuration and verified condition, not nominal length alone.

Observed price range and methodology

At the observation time, the dossier held two active, editorially eligible Batoo offers. Only the 2011 boat displayed an amount: €169,000. The observed range is therefore €169,000–€169,000 with a sample size of one; the unpriced 2006 boat cannot be used to extend or lower it.

This is an asking-price observation, not a valuation, sale result or market average. Tax position, year, location, equipment, condition, maintenance and negotiation may change the eventual figure. The method deliberately uses only visible asking prices from eligible active offers in this dossier and groups them by currency.

Four signals remain distinct: active subscription, identity status, offer freshness and editorial eligibility. Broker Pro means an active Batoo subscription; it is not identity or KYB verification and cannot guarantee coverage, ranking or a favourable assessment.
