In brief

The Four Winns Vista 268 suits couples or small families seeking a petrol-powered cruiser for day trips and occasional weekends, with cockpit space taking priority over genuinely separate cabins. Its main caveat is age: sterndrive condition, fuel and ventilation systems, water ingress and service evidence matter more than a low hour reading, while dimensions must be confirmed on the individual boat.

The Four Winns Vista 268 is a turn-of-the-century American express cruiser that puts an open social cockpit, sleeping accommodation and a separate head into a relatively compact package. Its key numbers need context: factory documents and individual listings do not always measure length from the same points, particularly when the swim platform is included.

Quick answer.

What the model is, and which dimensions are comparable

Four Winns’ 2000 Fast Facts gives an 8.59 m overall length with the swim platform and 7.88 m without it, a 2.59 m beam and 0.99 m draft with the drive down. It also lists 321 litres of fuel, 79 litres each for fresh water and holding, and capacity for ten people. These are period configuration data, not automatic certification of every surviving boat.

Batoo’s observed offers also contain 7.63, 7.88 and 8.60 m length values. They cannot all be treated as the same measurement. The 7.88 versus 8.59/8.60 m split is consistent with excluding or including the platform; 7.63 m remains unresolved. A berth, lift or transport decision should use the boat’s papers and a physical measurement.

Accommodation, engines and version differences

The plan follows the compact express formula: helm and seating in the cockpit, a companionway to a convertible forward dinette, a mid-cabin berth, a compact galley and an enclosed head. Whether a marketplace calls this one cabin or two is taxonomy rather than proof of structural separation. The dossier itself uses both counts for broadly similar arrangements, so buyers should assess privacy, ventilation, berth dimensions and access directly.

Three Batoo offer records describe single Volvo Penta petrol V8 sterndrives rated at 280, 300 and 310 hp, with 130, 244 and 1,000 declared hours respectively. Those are listing observations, not Batoo validation or a complete factory engine catalogue. The 2000 factory sheet lists choices from 250 to 310 hp and specifically pairs a 5.7 GSi/DP with 280 hp; serial plates, drive ratio, propellers and invoices should settle what a particular boat actually carries.

Strengths that follow from the layout

The useful quality is concentration. A 2.59 m beam permits a sociable cockpit and credible occasional sleeping space without moving into a larger twin-engine cruiser. The platform supports swimming and dock access, while one engine means one power unit rather than two to service.

Compactness also creates compromises. A single engine offers no propulsion redundancy. A petrol V8 makes fuel planning important, but tank capacity alone cannot establish range; loading, hull condition, propeller, sea state and engine health all intervene. The mid berth may feel low and is especially dependent on airflow, dry bilges and sound exhaust integrity. No speed or consumption promise is justified without a measured trial of the actual boat.

Who it is for, and the wrong mission

The Vista 268 makes sense for a couple extending day boating into one or two nights, or a small family willing to convert the dinette. It fits lakes and sheltered coastal cruising where fuel and services can be planned, subject to the individual boat’s equipment, certification and local requirements.

It is a weak match for buyers wanting two closed cabins, long periods away from facilities, mechanical redundancy or small-outboard running costs. Regular road towing also deserves caution. The factory weight figures cover boat and engine in specified configurations, not a complete road train with trailer, fluids, batteries, stores and cruising equipment.

A used-boat inspection that addresses the expensive risks

Begin with identity, not upholstery. Match the HIN, model year and first-registration records; one dossier entry is described as model year 2001 with first use in 2004. Measure for the intended berth or transport constraint and photograph engine and drive plates. Similar marketing names do not establish identical mechanical specifications.

For an ageing sterndrive, commission compression and diagnostic checks where applicable, and inspect engine oil, gear lubricant, bellows, gimbal bearing, trim system, propellers, corrosion and leakage. A coherent invoice history is more persuasive than the hour meter alone. A claimed 130 hours without chronology is not intrinsically safer than 1,000 well-documented hours.

Test the bilge blower before starting, inspect fuel hoses and connections, and check fire protection, carbon-monoxide alarms, batteries and charger. Trace moisture around ports, hatch, deck fittings, rails and the hull-to-deck joint. Operate freshwater, head, holding system, refrigerator and shore power with a competent surveyor. A haul-out survey followed by a sea trial reveals more than a cosmetic dockside viewing.

Three alternatives worth cross-shopping

Bayliner Ciera 2655weekend-oriented accommodation conceptfinish, systems condition and maintenance trail
Chaparral Signature 260closely sized sport-cruiser alternativecockpit ergonomics, hull and drive installation

There is no universal winner. A sound example with complete records and nearby technical support can be a better purchase than a theoretically superior model with deferred work. Nominal dimensions do not replace berth, lift and operating-range checks.

Asking-price evidence without a false range

On 27 August 2026, the dossier held three active Batoo offer records denominated in euros. One displayed €42,000; two displayed €1, an amount incompatible with a usable asking price and treated here as a placeholder. A defensible observed range therefore cannot be calculated: the only meaningful ask is €42,000, a sample of one.

This is Batoo analysis of observed offers, not a valuation. Year, tax position, commission, refit scope, engine and drive condition, equipment, moisture and negotiation can alter the transaction value. A larger set of real, comparable prices is required before describing a market band.
