In brief

The Bavaria C42 is a 12.40-metre-overall cruiser for families and small crews seeking generous space, up to three cabins and manageable sail handling. Its main caveat is configuration uncertainty across keel, engine, systems and documents: even official sources give inconsistent tank capacities, so each 2022 boat needs independent verification.

The Bavaria C42 is a production cruising yacht built around an unusually broad hull and a substantial sail plan for a hull length just under 12 metres. This is a model analysis, not a review of either advertised boat: official specifications, Batoo listing observations, editorial interpretation and unresolved items are kept deliberately separate.

Design, specifications and documentary differences

Bavaria attributes the design to Cossutti Yacht Design. The hull combines a full V-shaped bow with pronounced chines; Batoo’s interpretation is that the geometry is intended to reconcile forward volume, form stability and sailing ability, but that is not a sea-trial result. Twin helm stations, an open cockpit and the stern platform visible in listing photographs must still be checked boat by boat because equipment can vary.

ItemCurrent official figureRelevance to a 2022 used boat
Length overall12.40 mThe dossier’s 11.99 m matches official hull length, not overall length
Hull beam4.30 mListings state 4.29 and 4.30 m, consistent with rounding
Draught2.10 m standard; 1.70 m optionBoth offers state 2.10 m, but keel identity requires physical and documentary confirmation
Standard displacement10,070 kgA configuration figure, not a measured weight for either boat
Cabins / heads2 or 3 / 1 or 2A five-cabin listing field conflicts with the factory range and remains unresolved
Standard sail area90.5 m² in the technical tableThe same page also says 100.6 m² in prose, so the figures must not be averaged

Factory documentation is not fully consistent across versions. The current technical page gives approximately 180 litres of fuel and 180 litres of water plus an optional 235 litres; the official C-Line brochure gives 210 litres of fuel and 210/460 litres of water. Sail areas also differ between the page’s narrative and its table. For a 2022 C42, tank labels, the delivered manual, original invoice and sail plan for that hull are stronger evidence than a current web page.

Variants, engine and configuration identity

Official choices comprise two or three cabins, one or two heads, and a 2.10-metre standard keel or 1.70-metre shallow option. The C-Line brochure lists a 29 kW/40 PS standard engine and a 42 kW/57 PS option. In contrast, the Batoo dossier records one 2022 boat with a 57 hp Yanmar 4JH57 and 1,100 hours; that is a listing observation, not a universal C42 specification.

Price comparisons should therefore be normalised for keel, actual cabin and head count, engine, mainsail system, additional sails, electronics, heating or air-conditioning and deck equipment. A longer options list does not automatically mean a better boat. Installation quality, service evidence and relevance to the intended programme matter more.

The five-cabin field in the second offer should not be promoted into an undocumented “rare version”. It contradicts the official two/three-cabin range and could be a data-entry issue or a commercial interpretation of berths. Until photographs, layout drawing and papers agree, the correct status is unknown.

Reasoned strengths and limitations

The clearest strength is the relationship between beam, hull length and accommodation. A large saloon, choices up to three cabins and two heads, and generous deck zones make the C42 plausible for a family or two couples spending meaningful time aboard. Bavaria also identifies a self-tacking jib as standard, reducing work through a tack for a short-handed crew.

The trade-off begins with 4.30 metres of beam, which matters in berth pricing and tight marinas. A standard 90.5 m² sail plan and a mast height stated at up to 20.50 metres above the waterline also demand serious inspection of sails, standing rigging, deck gear and route clearance. Volume alone cannot prove comfort in a seaway or easy handling, and this analysis makes no unsupported performance promise.

Option diversity is another limitation for desktop comparisons. Two C42s of the same year can carry very different maintenance exposure and future cost. The factory sheet defines a model baseline; a signed inventory, invoices and an independent survey define the boat being purchased.

Ideal use and the owner it best suits

The C42 best suits family coastal and offshore cruising where interior room, storage and a deck plan manageable by a small crew rank highly. Its official CE design categories are A10/B12/C14, identifying permitted persons under the corresponding design categories. They are not a blanket endorsement for every voyage, weather state or operator.

It is less convincing for buyers seeking the lowest berthing cost, a stripped-out lightweight racer or the simplest possible maintenance regime. Anyone cruising shallow water needs to establish that the 1.70-metre keel is actually fitted rather than infer it from location. In former charter or intensive use, system cycles, interior wear and engine history may matter more than calendar age.

Used-boat checks before committing

Start by proving technical identity: hull identification, model and build year, CE papers, VAT evidence, maintenance records and signed inventory. Reconcile those documents with the actual cabins, heads, keel and engine. Any mismatch should be resolved before an option is credited with value.

An independent surveyor should examine the hull for moisture and repair evidence, the keel-to-hull area, steering system, bearings, play and impact signs. Mast, standing rigging, chainplates, attachment points, winches and sails need ages and histories, not merely a quick visual approval. Draught and mast height deserve direct confirmation because each can determine where the boat may safely go.

For the 57 hp engine recorded in one offer, 1,100 hours alone neither condemns nor validates condition. Cold starting, oil and coolant evidence where appropriate, exhaust, mounts, transmission, maintenance intervals and a loaded run form a useful picture. Tank capacities should be measured or identified because official documents conflict.

Test electronics, batteries, charging, refrigeration, pumps, water heating, gas installation and seacocks individually. A sea trial with the surveyor and an experienced skipper should then assess steering response, vibration, sail-handling equipment and water ingress. Batoo has not conducted such a trial on either dossier boat.

Alternatives for a disciplined comparison

ModelReason to include itDeciding question
Bavaria C38Smaller dimensions within the same C-Line design familyDoes the C42’s room justify the larger footprint and cost?
Bavaria C45More length and interior choices on the used marketIs the additional volume worth greater complexity?
Bavaria C46A newer, larger current C-Line referenceIs a newer platform preferable to the value case for a used C42?

This is a comparison framework, not a ranking. Define berth limits, crew size, required cabins, draught, refit reserve and resale priorities first. Only then should the shortlist expand to competing yards, using genuinely equivalent keels, layouts and equipment.

Observed prices and Batoo methodology

At 13 September 2026, the dossier contains two asking prices for boats stated as 2022 models and currently eligible active offers: €245,000 and €266,200. The observed range is therefore €245,000–€266,200 from a sample of two. It is a Batoo-offer observation, not a valuation, completed-sale evidence or a market index.

The method groups asking prices by currency for active eligible offers in this dossier only. It makes no adjustment for tax, country, options, keel, hours, condition, imminent work or negotiation, so computing a supposed “fair-value average” would be misleading. A useful comparison is total acquisition cost: negotiated price, survey, transport, taxes, mooring and evidenced refit.

Both offers are linked to active Broker Pro subscriptions, but a subscription is not identity or KYB verification and cannot guarantee editorial coverage, ranking or a favourable assessment. In the dossier, subscriptionactive, offerfresh and editorialeligible are separate signals; identityverified is reported separately, with a verified-offer count of zero. Images come from current listings and may show different individual boats, years and configurations; brokers and sellers have not reviewed, validated or approved this dossier.
