Boston Whaler 285 Conquest 2006: design, used checks and prices
A document-led look at the 2006 Boston Whaler 285 Conquest: official specifications, boat-to-boat differences, used checks and observed Batoo asks.

In brief
The 2006 Boston Whaler 285 Conquest is a cabin fishing boat for owners mixing angling, family day trips and short overnights. It combines a working cockpit, cabin and twin outboards. Its main caveat is two-engine and systems complexity; listing dimensions and configurations must also be checked against the manual, capacity plate and individual boat.

The 2006 Boston Whaler 285 Conquest combines a genuinely work-oriented cockpit with usable overnight accommodation, rather than behaving like a pure cabin cruiser. It deserves document-led assessment: the 285 Conquest name spans distinct generations, while surviving boats may carry replacement engines, electronics and equipment that differ materially from the original build.
2006 design, specifications and variants
Boston Whaler’s 2006 owner’s manual is the strongest identifier for this generation. It gives an overall length of 30 ft 2 in (9.19 m), a centreline hull length of 28 ft 2.5 in (8.60 m), a 9 ft 8 in (2.95 m) beam and 20 in (0.50 m) hull-only draft. Overall length and hull length are not interchangeable, which matters when a listing uses a shorter figure.
| 2006 specification | Official figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 9.19 m | manufacturer’s measured configuration |
| Centreline hull length | 8.60 m | not the same as overall length |
| Beam | 2.95 m | relevant to berthing and transport |
| Hull-only draft | 0.50 m | loading and equipment can increase draft |
| Dry weight, no engines | 3,357 kg | not ready-to-run displacement |
| Fuel capacity | 783 l | 207 US gallons |
| Rated power | 300–450 hp | official maximum is 450 hp |
| Persons capacity | 14 | the individual capacity plate remains controlling |
A manual revision dated July 2006 and distributed for the following model year gives 3,401 kg rather than 3,357 kg dry. This is a revision-level documentary conflict, not a figure to average: this 2006 dossier retains the specific 2006 manual value and requires the individual hull’s plate and papers to be checked.
The layout brings together a forward cabin, protected helm deck and open aft cockpit. The manual documents fuel, water, bilge, steering and domestic systems, but it cannot establish which original components remain aboard a particular used boat. Both Batoo records in the dossier show twin 225 hp Mercury Verados, totalling 450 hp. One record reports 2021 engines and 230 hours; the other reports 1,080 hours without a structured engine year. These are individual configurations, not universal model specifications.
A later 285 Conquest generation has different dimensions and ratings. Applying the current model page to a 2006 hull would therefore produce false comparisons. A buyer should identify the hull from its identification number, capacity plate and original documentation, then identify the installed engines separately.
Reasoned strengths and limitations
The central strength is mixed-purpose utility. Offshore-style fishing space, day boating and short overnight stays fit within a boat under ten metres overall. The cabin arrangement for this generation incorporates a convertible forward dinette, service area and transverse berth, while the cockpit retains priority. For a couple or small family, that gives more weather protection than an open boat without moving into a much larger cruiser.
The cost of that versatility is system complexity. Twin outboards, tanks, domestic services, electrical distribution and fishing equipment create more inspection and maintenance points. A 2.95 m beam and the true operating weight also affect berth, lift and transport decisions. The manual’s engine-free dry weight cannot safely be used as a towing weight.
Twin engines provide only qualified redundancy. Shared fuel, electrical faults, controls or deferred maintenance can disable both sides. Batoo has not sea-trialled these boats and assigns no standard speed, fuel burn or range to them. Those results must be measured on the individual hull with a stated load, propellers and conditions.
Ideal use and the right owner
The 285 Conquest suits an owner who alternates fishing with coastal cruising and regards the cabin as practical shelter rather than apartment-like accommodation. Outboards leave the machinery accessible, but a pair means two service schedules and two sets of age-related risks. The cockpit remains the defining space; buyers prioritising interior volume should compare a dedicated cruiser.
It is a weaker fit for frequent road transport, minimum running cost or extended stays by four adults. The persons rating describes capacity, not comfort. A realistic viewing should rehearse the intended day with crew, tackle, coolers, safety gear, water and fuel aboard, including how people move between cockpit, helm and berths.
Used-boat checks before committing
Start by proving the boat’s identity. Hull number, model year, capacity plate and papers should agree, while advertisement measurements may not. The two Batoo records give lengths of 8.51 and 8.53 m and beams of 2.90 and 2.92 m, all different from the 2006 manual. This dossier does not average them: measurement conventions, rounding or unresolved version data may be responsible.
An independent surveyor should inspect hull and deck for repairs, stress, abnormal moisture, poorly sealed hardware, through-hulls and hull-to-deck integrity. Visual cleanliness is not structural evidence. Bilge pumps and alarms, seacocks, windlass, navigation lights, battery charging, shore power, freshwater and waste systems should be operated rather than merely inventoried.
Engine due diligence needs serial numbers, invoices, electronic diagnostics, an appropriate mechanical health test, gearcase inspection, cooling condition and evidence of corrosion control. A recent repower adds value only when mounting, weight, steering, controls, instruments and total rating comply with the hull. The dossier’s 230 and 1,080-hour figures are materially different, but hours alone cannot establish maintenance quality or remaining life.
The sea trial should begin cold and record starting behaviour, engine synchronisation, attainable rpm with the fitted propellers, available temperatures and alarms, steering, trim response, running attitude and water ingress. A listing observation cannot replace survey and trial of the asset being bought.
Alternatives and programme comparison
| Model to investigate | Why it belongs on the shortlist | Deciding question |
|---|---|---|
| Grady-White Sailfish 282 | another US fishing-cabin concept | do its layout and support network suit you better? |
| Pursuit 2870 Offshore | a comparable fishing/cruising philosophy | how do you weight finish against working cockpit space? |
| Boston Whaler 255 Conquest | a smaller historical family alternative | can you trade volume for lower ownership demands? |
| Boston Whaler 305 Conquest | the larger step within the family | can berth and budget absorb the increase? |
This is not a ranking and does not claim identical years, measurements or market values. Useful comparison requires same-era examples, official documentation and verified condition. First choose the programme—cockpit priority, cabin volume, handling burden or desired range—then compare specific boats.
Observed prices and Batoo methodology
On 1 October 2026, the dossier recorded two active Batoo asking prices for boats represented as 2006 examples: €83,000 and €109,900. The observed range is therefore €83,000–€109,900 from a sample of two. These are asking prices, not completed sales or a valuation; tax, commission, country, maintenance, electronics, condition and propulsion can all move the final number.
Batoo analysis deliberately does not average the two asks because the boats are not homogeneous. One reports 2021 Verados and far fewer hours, while the other reports 1,080 hours. A defensible offer needs survey findings, near-term work, fiscal documents and genuine sold comparables where obtainable.
Images come from current Batoo listings and may show different individual boats or configurations. Brokers and sellers have not reviewed or approved this dossier. The signals remain separate: subscription active, offer fresh and editorial eligible are positive, while the identity-verified offer count is zero. Broker Pro means the active subscription only; it is not identity or KYB verification and never guarantees editorial coverage, ranking, a positive assessment or inclusion in the stable article body.
